NOVEMBER FEATURES
Well, November is just about over. The blog was born on November 7th, so I had to squeeze things in this month and, being a neophyte, spend time tinkering with the format. I hope to have it down by the end of December and officially start the project for the year of 2006.Designer of the Month

FEATURE: Lisa Eisner, person of the month

Over the summer I took an intensive sewing class at FIT. One day I noticed a flyer about style and ended up auditioning for a reality tv show in the vein of Project Runway, but for stylists. A little petrified of making a complete ass of myself and wondering what the hell I was doing, I was comforted that at least it was on cable and maybe nobody would see it. At the audition they asked us which celebrity we thought had great style. While one woman was claiming Oprah looked great, I quietly said, "Lisa Eisner." If the room had been filled with fashion insiders, the answer might have been seen as savvy, but here I just received some blank stares.
I mentioned Lisa in my earlier post on the flea market. Okay, so who is she and why, you might ask, is she person of the month? Her list of occupations include fashion editor, designer, muse, photographer, creative director, publisher and hunter. Hunter? Yes, she hunts for style on the plains of the flea market and in the jungle of thrift shops. As someone who has the ability to influence our pop culture, she also sings the praises of the value of vintage. I have read she purchased a lot of Sammy Davis Jr.'s suits- and wears them. In another piece, I read she used to hit all the thrift stores on the way out to Palm Springs and then try to make it the whole weekend wearing only her new finds. Okay, so maybe she is not saving the planet or even trying to, but sometimes it is good to be reminded that there is a whole heck of a lot of style in the past that can be recycled into our future and, furthermore, that we have freedom of expression - at least for now.
She shot her sons (above) and their friends for a spread in GQ. As a former muse to Tom Ford, here is what he has to say about the boys: Charlie and Louie Eisner are two of the most beautifully raised young men I know. The thing that is so cool about these guys is not the obvious great sense of style and confidence they both have, but their mind-set. They have a natural sense of ease about them that comes from an open acceptance of individuality. They are nonjudgmental of even the most extreme eccentricities. This comes from growing up in a home where individuality and passion for life is celebrated. I can’t wait to see what these two guys do with their lives.
At Greybull Press she has published books on a myriad of subjects from cowgirls to Shriners to R. Crumb, always presenting a fresh look on the subjects. As someone who has spent hours looking through old snapshots found at thrift shops, I appreciated her fresh take on fashion in The Height of Fashion:
Everyone has one. Their height of fashion. A time in their lives when they felt like they could really knock your eyes out, they were so “on”. Maybe it was the perfect accessory or right shade of blue or maybe it was the genius foresight to combine stripes with plaids. Their neck got longer, their back got straighter and their hair got better. They were “lookin’ good and feelin’ good” and nothing and no one could stand in their way because they looked so darned incredible. Editors Lisa Eisner and Roman Alonso invited a cross section of the famous, not-so-famous and not-famous-at-all to provide a photo that captured that moment of self-defined height of fashion. Results range from the hilarious to the sublime, from the ultra chic to the un-cool, but always intimate and original.

Gomi NYC

Yesterday I was complaining about the dearth of style in sustainable duds, complaining that I thought there were too many t-shirts. Then last night I paid a visit to neighborhood shop Gomi, 443 E. 6th St., and had to eat those words. Her shop abounds with stylin' sustainability. She has a good selection of clothing and accessories and those cool Ekobo bamboo bowls I love. I will definitely be back with my camera for a more in depth peek in the future.
Le Gamin et Le Gap
Thanks to Melanie for taking today's picture and always knowing what I want to order!Reused: 70's space dyed sweater
Reduce: Calvin Klien shorts (these were in the donate pile as pants, but I decided to shorten them and ended up wearing them all summer without needing to buy a new pair of this now popular length, here they are working with some tights)
New: Hue tights, Louboutin flats, *Gap shirt (okay, don't gasp!)
*I remember walking by a Gap store in my neighborhood that had been plastered with fake ad posters which upon closer look were criticizing the company's labor practices. Needless to say, I no longer have a Gap in my neighborhood. Well, in terms of style, the company did something right last year by revamping their design team and putting Pina Ferlisi (Theory, Marc Jacobs) in charge. Recently, while perusing the corporate site, I noticed they had a piece on their social responsibility. They now have Gap Inc Vendor Compliance Officers inspecting their factories. And they state, "In 2004, we reduced energy consumption in our U.S. stores by 2.4 percent from 2003." Hmmm, not quite Patagonian standards, but I suppose, due to the number of stores, it is a Nike-esque drop in the bucket. Now I've heard Pina Ferlisi left the company abruptly last month. So, it will be interesting to see what's happening in their design next year. I, for one, will be back when there is a Gap Green label.11.29.2005

Recently I posted on Lulu Frost's recycled necklaces that are hot items at Barney's, and today Barney's beautiful holiday catalog arrived in the mail. There were a few items for the eco wish list, in my case, emphasize wish. Barney's fashion director, Julie Gilhart, took part in an Ingeo Round Table discussion back in May. She states:
And on to the stylishly sustainable stocking stuffers...
Alyssa Norton recycles vintage rhinestones into her beautiful and unique pieces.

Since we’re at the high end, the term “sustainability” really makes both the customers and salespeople really zone out.Julie is right. While I "reuse" a lot of clothing, I don't wear just any "old" thing. What really makes me sit up and take notice is STYLE ...and sustainability. Aside from vintage, I had such a hard time trying to find this combination when I began looking (if I see another organic t-shirt!) that I finally decided to pursue making my own stuff... and apparently blog about it. Now, I see the tide changing with brands like stewart+brown or Loomstate entering the marketplace. I have hope, but I still need more than jeans and t-shirts.

MayaBags works in six villages of the Maya Mountains and currently with over 50 women. We offer Mayan women the opportunity to become second income-providers to their household and, as such, to build their self-esteem within their community. By providing work and assisting the women with quality and design, MayaBags also supports the continuation of the Mayans' traditional skill of embroidery. The women are paid good market wages up front for every piece they embroider. In addition to embroidering, Mayan women also sew the bags in our sewing workshop in Punta Gorda, Belize. From start to finish, these bags are made by Mayan women.

Le Gitan's "reused" cashmere sweater with handsewn applique.
Koi has been on the fashion radar for awhile and is a personal favorite. I recommend her website to see her beautifully shot archives. Her pieces are truly pieces of art and have spawned and inspired a variety of similar attempts and imitations. I myself admit to having some cashmere kicking around the ready-to-recycle bin, maybe when the umbrella dress is finished...
Okay, this is NOT in the Barney's catalog, but the Koi sweater above reminded me of one of the first things I ever made. I made this rose out of an old t-shirt one night a couple of years ago. It isn't Koi, but it might look nice if there were "rows of roses" sewn on clothing or as a substitute to a bow on top of a gift.

Mark Davis recycles vintage bakelite pieces into cool dog tags adding gold engraving and gemstones. Forget the dog, I'd string them on strips of silk remnants.

I have never been to New Zealand, but this summer I drank enough of their sauvignon blanc to have at least a touch of Kiwi in me. In honor of New Zealand Fashion week check out green label Untouched World.
Untouched World uses organic fabrics for its collection of stylish separates designed to go from yoga class to lunch and back. Sheep being one of the country's major natural resources, the brand has developed Mountainsilk, a lightweight merino wool fabric that's machine washable. Merinomink, meanwhile, is an insulating blend of wool and possum fur. (via style.com)

Balmy Manhattan

Today there will be a high of 67!! I wish I could be outside, despite the predicted rain, instead of blogging and patternmaking all day, but duty calls. At least I had a nice stroll this morning. Here I am outside of Le Gamin on 5th Street. Off to see a client after my dose of caffeine and W magazine.
Reused: black and white striped sailor shirt, Starsky sweater (I searched for almost two years for this find, another 70's reminiscence!!), Levi's cords (cut off below knee and in need of some type of hem), Ferragamo boots, suede hobo bag, belt
Reduced: I have to put the scarf in this category, even though I bought it new. I have had it for years. It is a great travel item. While sailing along the South of France one summer, my crewmates commented about it at the end of one day, "Jilligan,", which was my nickname on board, "You have had that scarf on 10 different ways in the last 24 hours!" So, it's versatility and durability have earned it energizer bunny status.

Designers of the Month: Stewart+Brown
"At long last, the human species has evolved to the point where we can grasp the concept that earth-friendly fashions need not stop at hemp. This is due in no small part to Stewart+Brown, the Ventura, California–based green-produced, downtown-inspired apparel company created in 2002 by the husband-and-wife team of designer Karen Stewart, 35, and brand guru Howard Brown, 37, alumni of Patagonia and Urban Outfitters, respectively." read more here

What better time to feature this breath of fresh air to the organic marketplace than now. Any of you Angelenos out there, run, don't walk to their holiday sale!!

Lulu Frost

Lisa Salzer designs her Lulu Frost jewelry with a strong emphasis on the past. She incorporates (or recycles) found objects and vintage jewels and chains into her unique pieces. She is probably best known for her popular line of necklaces that use the bronze room numbers from the original Plaza Hotel.
Life

I am lucky to be inspired by the many stylish, resourceful and creative people in my neighborhood. I am trying to always be armed and ready to shoot. I was walking home from seeing a client this morning and caught this girl outside of Life Cafe.
Recycled: jean skirt.
Reused: boots, tuxedo shirt.
"You're money, and you don't even know it."
Reused: black leather motorcycle jacket (I was so excited when I found this at a vintage shop in Kansas. It has great detail.), black scarf (flea market find), braided rug bag (ebay)
Reduce: you can't see it, but I am wearing a plain black skinny ribbed wool Calvin Klien sweater. I have had this sweater for over five years and will likely have it a long time.
New: black Theory pants, Chie Mihara boots (These almost belong in the reduce category, I bought them years ago in Barcelona from one of Chie's first collections. She always stays true to her vision and tends not to follow trends which make her shoes more timeless, so while the landfills will be piled with sequinned flats in a year, I'll still be wearing these boots.)

ebay item of the week
This week brings an interesting story. Aside from the "green" benefits of "reusing" clothing you also often get the added bonus of a little history. You could wear the jacket from this suit with a trendy Victorian inspired blouse, some jeans and stacked heel boots from the 70's and I am sure nobody would guess that the jacket is about 85 years old!! Bought right here in NYC at Abercrombie and Fitch. The auction ends in six days. The full story in the listing is below.

Oh my was this a find at a Palm Beach Estate Sale!
And what a story:
Granddaughter told be this was her Grandmothers, who came from England to New York in 1918 as a school teacher, by way of ship.
Lived in New York City until 1930 then to Connecticut until the 50's
then moved to Miami then Palm Beach with her second husband in the 70's until present. She died in 2003 at 100yrs old. This suit, ship ticket, school lessons, books, eyeglasses and suitcase were all saved by her mother who is now gone. Only the suit was for sale. The granddaughter said she remembered her mother and grandmother talk about Abercrombie and Fitch and how they were then a sporting goods store with dogs and cats. I contacted A and F with this picture and they confirmed it was probably purchased in their NYC downtown store on Madison and 45th Street and they did have a kennel then.
Cool Huh!
Please do not bid if you plan on cutting this suit up!
Its style is timeless and could still be worn today.

100% new
For the first time since starting the blog, everything I am wearing is new. I didn't do so well on the 3Rs today, so I will blog about the reused dress above. This is a dress my mother made for my sister when she was a baby and saved it all these years so that my niece now can wear this little heirloom. chubby morning

Brrrr. The balmy weather seems to have blown away. Time for a fur chubby to fight the morning chill. I look like I am holding someone up with guns in my pockets. But, people, you work with the image you have. It's the best I can do before noon and a cup of coffee. Maybe I should start wearing animal masks, like Alena's models I showed in the Animal Planet post a couple of days ago.
ReUsed Content: butter soft boots, fur chubby - I think this is mouton??, wood beads
last night was a gas

Went to GAS.

lots of people. waiting.

aaaah! start this crazy art show. my tongue is turning green. must have been the Clorets.

the Chinatown Beard Boys were there.

They took pictures of us and we took pictures of the tattoo. They assured me they were pretty much all REUSED CONTENT. I was 50% in my YSL polka dots, white blouse and black boots.I was mildly disturbed by the images of a naked woman in bondage hanging upside down that I had seen earlier in the back room, so I wasn't sure what to expect from DRIFT...

...but I loved it. Very mesmerizing and the images hit on many of my favorite subjects (very organic, trees, water, nature) and a series of light bulb images from marquees that were great. Too bad I don't know how to work my new camera yet, these pictures would look so much better without the flash! And...

...despite the lack of a theremin or complementary hallucinogenics, they did one better by having a bagpipe player in the closet. Way to go guys, great piece.

Boleros @ Esperanto

Tonight my friend Nancy and I went to see Daniela (a.k.a. Raquel Marti) perform boleros with Sofia and Kahil at Esperanto.

I spotted this cool bracelet on Nancy. I asked her if she bought it new. She told me it was old and that it had the smell of it's old owner. I don't know if she meant it's previous owner, but I was picturing some older tribal gentleman in Mali and wondering what he smelled like. Hmmm?
reused content: Oscar de la Renta blouse, jean w/gold thread skirt, Maud Frizon boots, cocktail ringAnimal Planet

I know it is a stretch to find the sustainability here and it is fair to say there is none, but I think the style is off the charts. It is so refreshing to see someone following their own vision while referencing traditions and I just fell in love with these photos, so I thought I'd share...

A cashmere promotion brought live goats to Sixth Avenue, but it was the tradition of Russian folk festivals, where people dress as animals, that inspired 27-year-old Alena Akhmadullina, who showed in Paris and off-schedule in Moscow, to put models in chicken, ram, horse, and fox masks. In celebration of Angela's Wedding (wild card #1)
What about this wedding you ask? Did Angela wear a hemp silk and Ingeo gown like the one by Oscar de la Renta shown below. (BTW, the dress was made for Verdopolis's Future Fashion Show, which will make a believer out of anyone who doubts the possibility for sustainability to exist with style.)

Well, no she didn't, but we do have some "reused" clothing references between us. I first met Angela, when my friend, photographer Melissa Lynn, asked me to style a photo shoot for Gida Bavari. Of course I styled her in reused content!! The dress, belt and cocktail ring as seen below with the beautiful Gida Bavari bag. You have to love metallics, because they are versatile, which means one bag can go a long way (reduce ;) !)

The next thing you know Angela's friend Jan from McCann Erickson calls and I did a little styling for her project with Paul Kamuf. And of course I styled in a lot of reused content, here the actress is in a bobbin lace top from the 20's and a faux fur vest with soutache detailing.

Then I was invited to Angela's Bachelorette party. Because I procrastinated in putting away the ten outfit changes for the shoot earlier in the week, it was easy to get dressed as I kept pulling from the workload hanging on the back of the door. So, this is what I wore...

Reused: one of my all time favorites, a vintage Goldworm dress that my awesome tailor (Stanton Tailors) shortened without loosing the detail of the print, some guy (he told me he was a Berber from Africa) went crazy for this dress later on at T.H.O.R., the jean blazer was a flea market find, the Aigner macrame and leather purse courtesy of ebay.
New: the "pashmina", really made from enviro-friendly tree pulp, Tencel, it is super soft, suede Ralph Lauren boots (you can't see them, but I have to be honest with the numbers)

format
To my dearly limited readership, thank you. It has been a week and I am already tired of myself, so I can't imagine how you feel. So, as you might have seen, I am attempting to spice things up a bit with some different features. For those of you just tuning in...
The Project: the blog revolves around my project to wear clothing based on the reuse-reduce-recycle mantra of the green movement without sacrificing style. The goal is to average 50% reused (essentially not purchased as new) or recycled (a piece made from something else) and also discuss reduction. As you know, reducing consumption is not what people who love fashion want to talk about, but perhaps we can twist it around and look at it in a positive light. For example, what are the Energizer Bunnies in your closet? The items you've had for years and, hence, have not needed to replace with new purchases, the classic investments. Or it can be thought of as reducing pollution by embracing apparel companies that use green production practices and materials and give back to the environment, such as patagonia.
Features:
ebay item of the week: when I first moved to New York, I soon realized it isn't like other places for many reasons, one of which is, Goodwill and the Salvation Army do not come and pick up the old furniture you want to donate. Because most people don't have cars, most of the stuff ends up on the sidewalk. It was like a random swap meet, you'd put your stuff out one week and the next week carry home someone else's. Now, thank goodness, we have craigslist and ebay. This feature comes with a warning to those slightly addicted to shopping. Ebay is a powerful thing my friends, use with caution.
store of the month: some of these will be online and others will be here in NYC or somewhere in my travels.
person of the month: people from the intersection of sustainability and style will be featured monthly.
wild cards: from time to time I might be in bed with the flu or spend the whole day in my pajamas or just not have a photo of myself. During these times I will play a wild card, a picture of an outfit worn in the past.
and the rest will be snippets here and there and things developed on the fly. Suggestions are always welcome.

a FITting day

Someone I met earlier this week at GreenDrinks told me about a new museum he was helping his friend launch. The New York Museum of Water will raise "awareness of water and the need to love and protect it." This topic is near to my heart, so I offered to help in future events. As a photographer obsessed with water in the past and also hoping to put my images to good use in the future, I see many possibilities for art to play a role in conveying the museum's message. To read more about water issues click here.
He also told me about his friend who will be spending 1,000 days at sea in his sailboat..... 1,000 days without sight of land that is!!! I wish him well and look forward to sailing vicariously through him.

After shirring and draping all day here I am with the girls.... hmmm, looks like I need to watch more America's Next Top Model for some posing pointers.
reused: white/silver Christian Dior blouse, San Francisco Pantworks jean vest, gray Ferragamo boots, tweed/fur jacket, suede bag.
new: Zara jeans.

Backroom @ The Changing Room

After spending TEN hours cutting and sewing a sleeve, I thought I needed to get out of the apartment....and out of my pjs! So, I went to a little event at my friend Simone's The Changing Room. Here I am in the backroom...
Reused: Woodstock t-shirt, besides being a fan of Snoopy, I liked this shirt because I grew up in Woodstock, Yves St. Laurent red silk shirt, Scandinavian cardigan sweater.
New: Poleci jeans, Puma sneakers.

FALLtering
It was a beautiful, breezy, crisp FALL morning. I went for a run this morning to kickstart some motivation and big golden leaves covered the sidewalks. I couldn't find my small headphones, so I had to wear my big honkin' Sennheisers that I bought for work. I looked like one of those models in Jay's final fashion show on Project Runway. They actually worked a bit like earmuffs as an added bonus to the great sound quality, but I did get a few odd looks. I was too happy in my head to care.
Thanks to the man at the bus stop who snapped today's pictures.

Reused: red raincoat, rug bag (again), gray Ferragamo boots
New: scarf, but I purchased it new about 15 years ago, it has holes in it, but wrap it around your neck a few times and they disappear.
I love the back detail.

Reused: t-shirt, sweater, love the popcorn knit detail
New: skirt from System Action in Barcelona
Gifts: the crystal was given to me by a stranger at a Grateful Dead concert outside of Chicago way back when. I think my friends left me there that night and I was freezing. I bought a beach towel from the local gas station that was quite ugly, but warm. That was life without cellphones....they eventually came back for me, thank goodness. The other necklace is a special gift from the past. It is a little silver pot with a top that opens and little jewels.

blog express

I finally hooked up the new camera and clearly this is no vanity project as I am looking pretty scary in the photo. Just home from my evening class, I only had time to change and go back out to celebrate Natalie's birthday with some dancing at The Speakeasy Lounge, Natalie and her sister are in the photo here.
Recycled content: the skirt I made from an old cotton sheet for a class project, it was a very poufy experiment, but after weeks of sewing up half garments in muslin I really needed to make something whole that I could actually wear.
Reused: the boots (which you cannot see in the photo, but are shown below), a jean jacket, and the ever popular "braided rug" bag.
Bought New: the top.
And it looks like I didn't shower, so I probably saved some water too!!

Here are my rain soaked boots, 100% reused. These Italian babies were found on ebay for about $10. I got the idea to make a dress from fabric from blown out umbrellas. So, while walking home from FIT one blustery Saturday I found tons!! By Union Square I was becoming picky about which umbrellas to use... and also feeling like quite the bag lady lugging around shopping bags stuffed with the fabric and pulling umbrellas out of trash cans on the corner. I just wanted to stop into a warm cafe for some hot chocolate. I found a quaint little French spot close to home, but managed to knock over the metal fencing surrounding the outdoor seating with one of my overstuffed bags and everyone stopped and stared. So, I just moped home in the rain. And you can see my booty drying in the bathroom.

better days to come...
My friend Roberto called and invited me to dinner so he could give me all the umbrella fabric he and his girlfriend collected for me. Thanks guys!!

Here I am after dinner on a very green mode of transportation, but the bike isn't actually mine, I walked.
Reused content: Christian Dior white/silver shirt with rhinestone buttons, Chanel-esque tweed (from a suit I scored for $15!), bronze leather bag, and the amazing Maud Frizon gold western-ish boots.
Bought New: jeans.

With my new friend after an evening of flat pattern making.
Reused content: wooden necklaces, 70's style Gap jeans bought off ebay for $4, vintage Ferragamo boots and the Starsky sweater I searched high and low for for two years (It reminds me of this beautiful hippie girl who lived on my block growing up in Woodstock.)
Bought new content: white embroidered blouse bought in Oaxaca, Mexico
This woman took the picture of me below. I saw her pulling this phone out of the garbage, she said she was bringing it to a store to sell to help raise money for the homeless. I didn't get the fine details, but sounded like recycling to me.

Reused: Levi's corduroys, vintage Ferragamo boots, gray leather jaket, tan silk scarf (which is a belt from a vintage Adele Simpson dress I have)
Bought New: black cashmere v-neck sweater from Vince. This sweater was an investment in a classic that I will likely wear for years to come, the type of items I look for when buying new.

After GreenDrinks last night I walked home because the weather has been so lovely. I came across friends sitting at the window table at Falai, the great restaurant on Clinton St. After stopping in for a chat I was luckily lavished with the desserts the kitchen had sent over that they were too stuffed to touch. YUM!! When we got up to leave both girls pulled on great looking "reused" vintage coats, so I had to snap a pic while they dashed into a cab.

and FURther more...

Well, those of you who know me know that I get cold easily. It is always challenging to remain warm and stylish (and eco friendly). It is still too warm for me to bust out my Tuscan Lamb fur hat, but not too early for you to start thinking about one of your own. I know, I know....fur. That is not too eco friendly you're thinkin'. But when purchased from my favorite store ebay it is reused fur, one of the three golden (or green) Rs, so I am okay with that. Of course you must decide for yourself, but with the boots from yesterday's post and my fur hat, which went over well everywhere I wore it (comparisons were made to dandelions, baked alaska and afros), I was toasty on the bitterest of days. This year I am thinking this dark brown one might do the trick.

snuggly NOT ugg-ly

A blog is born....please be patient with my mistakes as I am a blog neophyte!!!
Okay, the idea is to post my personal clothing options with STYLE for my mission to be 50% reused and recycled throughout the year. However, because I haven't hooked up my new camera to my new laptop yet, these images will have to do. While they aren't my boots specifically, I suppose they are still fair game because I actually own a pair of these boots.
Although I am essentially opposed to UGG boots, especially when worn with mini skirts during warm weather, I will concede they have a use when the mercury begins to plummet. Not one to easily give into trends or part with $200, I found these boots a more affordable and stylish option to keep my feet toasty all last winter. I really wanted a pair of Balenciaga motorcycle wedge boots, but could not afford them on my slacker income, so these were a decent compromise.....and reused.
So, my lovelies having size 7 - 7 1/2 feet and paypal accounts, run to ebay now. One pair is a 7 and ending in 7 hours currently at $19.99 and the other pair is 7 1/2, ends in 6 days and asks a starting bid or Buy It Now price of $125 (!!!). I know you can do the math here.
Well, I must run now because I have to get to work on my recycled umbrella dress (hopefully, I'll finish it in time for tomorrow night's greendrinks event!) and all this new blogging has cost me to miss bidding on auctions for my new fall staples. Black has been declared the new black.... however ridiculous that sounds, I do love vintage jet and all things flapper, like the beads below that just slipped through my fingers.
