Baby Cakes NYC
reused: slip, silk dress, wool jacket, leather boots, Aigner bagYou may have noticed the scattered activity on the blog of late. I have been juggling various things and have had no less than four friends visit NYC this month, one is still here in my living room. My computer was refusing to cooperate and now I have misplaced my camera, but I am trying to catch up. Somehow I do remember this was Sunday and that I went to Baby Cakes.
I first heard of Baby Cakes, a vegan bakery, from a friend who was visiting. She had been diagnosed with celiac disease and learned that any wheat was disastrous for her digestive system, so she knew where all the gluten and wheat free bakeries were. Owner Erin McKenna, above, was inspired to open the bakery due to her own experiences trying to find tasty treats after learning she was allergic to wheat. On my first visit I was so full from brunch that I didn't sample the bakery offerings, but the look on my friend's face after biting into a brownie was enough for me to make sure I got myself back there soon. Last Sunday was the perfect opportunity. I met up with friends Peter and Jill, who live nearby and also happen to be vegan and big fans of the bakery. Years ago, I took an intensive training at The Natural Gourmet, so I knew many good things could be made without sugar, dairy and wheat and was definitely eager to sample some treats. As I waited outside for my friends, it looked like I wasn't the only eager one. The place was packed and people continually streamed through the door. I followed Jill's lead and ordered the chocolate banana bread and was not disappointed. You can read more about the bakery here, but I highly recommend stopping by for your own taste of guilt-free heaven.
Here Jill and I sit out front, she in cute, modern chic, me stuck in bohemia... I can't help it, some of those frocks still need to get out of the closet despite being yesterday's trend.
